BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 10:30-35 KJV (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 12 January 2020)

30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: BIBLICAL CLUE

A. Seeking medical attention should not be view as demonic, lack of faith or carnal.

B. Rather, there are scriptural prescriptions as well as contemporary medical interventions that do not just bring about quick relief but also save lives (Isa. 38:21).

C. Ultimately, God heals (Ex.15:26).

D. The bible mentions various medical processes/treatments. For instance:
i. People applied bandages and ointments to wounds (Isa.1:6).
ii. Some used oil and wine as healing agents (James 5:14; Lk. 10: 34; 1 Tim.5:23).

E. Modern surgery or pharmaceuticals are not umbilical, only that, when the bible was written, those treatments had not yet been invented (Dan. 12:4; Isa.33:6).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should discussions why some believers do not seek medical help to take care of their health challenges.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE RIGHT APPROACH

A. There are several provisions at the disposal to improve or correct our health.

i. Preventive healthy habits such as eating and sleeping well, drinking enough water, and doing regular exercises will steadily improve any person’s health.
ii. Christians should not hesitate to visit or consult with the appropriate medical practitioners, when the needs arise.
iii. We should, however, avoid patronising quacks, magicians or witchdoctors (Lev. 19:31; Deut.18:10).
iv. Maternal health-care is essential for pregnant women.
v. Immunisation of children against strange diseases/epidemics should not be taken for granted.
vi. It is good to participate in healthcare insurance plans.

B. However, our ultimate faith and trust should be in God and not in medical experts or medicine (Mk.5:25-26).
i. All medical processes/treatments should be committed unto God before, during and after.
ii. Physicians care, God heals. (Psalms 103:3; 7:20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should mention some medical breakthroughs in modern times.

SUMMARY: Taking care of our health is not a sign of unbelief. It is to keep the body, soul and spirit together for destiny fulfilment.

CONCLUSION: If we lack wisdom and let our bodies fall into disrepair,we risk sudden sickness or injury that can take us out of God’s purpose for living.

EVALUATION: What are the clues available for believers to care for their health?

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, do not let my body fall into state of disrepair.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five (5) things you know about orthodox/modern medicine and alternative/traditional medicine.
