BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 16:19-31 KJV (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 18 August 2019)

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:

28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

MEMORY VERSE: “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” – Psalms 9:17 (scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 18 August 2019 HYMN)

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Is there an everlasting hell? The Bible declares in very certain terms that there is. There are 162 texts in the New Testament alone that speak of the doom that awaits the unrepentant sinners. The Lord Himself uttered 70 of these. Hell is a reality, an awful fact to be realized. The Bible makes it abundantly clear that the wicked that finally reject Christ will be turned into hell. Psalm 9:17

i. Both the rich and poor will die one day. Luke 18:22

ii. The doomed will suffer pain in hell if they refuse to repent from their sins while here on earth. Luke 16:23

iii. Although the death of rich may attract a lot of funfair but the end I’d torment (if they fail to acknowledge Jesus as Lord) whereas, the poor who are saved will end rejoicing in comfort. Luke 16:23-24.

iv. Those who fail to introduce their family members to Christ will lose them to hell (where there is no repentance). Luke 16:27-31.

v. Those in heaven or hell will identify one another. Luke 16:23.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: What does the Bible say about hell?

Question 1: Will the doomed repent in hell, seek the Lord and be forgiven?

Answer: No. There is no repentance, no knowledge or device in grave. There is no answer to the request of those who are doomed in hell. Luke 16:24-27; Eccl. 9:10

Question 2: Does ‘hell’ not mean ‘grave’ where both the good and bad must go?

Answer: No. Both rich and poor, good and bad would die and go to the grave e.g. Lazarus and the rich man. Luke 16:19-31.

  • The soul of the rich man (wicked) went to hell and the soup of Lazarus (poor but accepted the Lord) went to heaven (bosom of Abraham). Luke 16:22.
  • Those in hell cannot cross or escape to heaven because there is a great gulf fixed between the two locations. Luke 16:26.

Question 3: Is there any place of probation or purgatory after death?

Answer: No, once a person dies, he/she either goes to heaven or hell. Heb. 9:27.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should mention some deceptions or lies they had heard about hell which are not scriptural.

SUMMARY: Hell is real and it is for the wicked.

CONCLUSION: How does one get to hell? It is simply by neglecting the salvation purchased for us by the blood of Jesus (Heb. 2:3). How does one avoid hell? It is by receiving Jesus as one’s personal Saviour (John 3:16; Prov. 15:24). What is your choice?

EVALUATION: Describe hell.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, save me, my household and class members from going to hell.

ASSIGNMENT: Differentiate between heaven and hell in five (5) points.
