TOPIC: Hindrances to Prayer (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 30 May 2019)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Chronicles 10-12; John 11:30-57

FIRE SCRIPTURE: James 4:1-7

MEMORY VERSE: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” – James 1:8

The MESSAGE:

Prayer, as already established, is one of the greatest spiritual weapons God gave to His children for successful Christian living. Prayer is an instrument that gives Christians access to God’s presence at all times as God Himself expects us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Christians use the prayer tool for asking, seeking, knocking and for confronting all sorts of negative situations in order to claim victory over them. Prayer is given to us for drawing God’s presence into our lives and for enlisting God’s intervention into human affairs. Prayer is given for the expansion of God’s kingdom through the Great Commission to demonstrate God’s power through signs and wonders, to defeat satan, his agents and to frustrate their activities upon the earth, and also to bring down revival.

Unfortunately, there are hindrances to prayer. Hindrances to prayer are obstacles, limitations and negative forces that attack the prayer life of a Christian and make it difficult for him or her to pray effectively and get result. The Bible says, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:6). Thus, when prayer is not “effectual and fervent, and made by a righteous person, it will be hindered. Unfortunately, many Christians who were known for their effectual fervency in prayer have slackened. This is because they feel there is no need to pray any more. Having prayed and fasted without results, why continue, they reason? Some churches that used to be popular for holiness and righteousness are now overtaken by worldinness and carnality. Many members have lost heaven consciousness. We often see pride, envy, malice, sickness, poverty, untimely death among believers. Coldness and shallow Christian living are becoming the norm among the people of God. These used to be seen as strange occurrences among believers. Prayerlessness has taken over the centre stage. The faith of many has grown too cold and for them, prayer is becoming too difficult a task. Effectual fervent prayers are now becoming scarce. That is why it is important to examine hindrances to prayers and deal with them in our lives. Answer to prayer is part of our sonship benefits in Christ. When there are hindrances, we know that something is wrong somewhere. Thus, hindrances to prayer include but not limited to: Lack of genuine salvation. If a person is not genuinely born again, the person would still be living a carnal life. Such a person’s prayer cannot be effectual fervent prayer that would receive quick answer. Inability to live a holy and righteous life is another hindrance. If someone is living a sinful life, holiness and righteousness will be far from the person’s life. Prayer will be hard for such to make. Moreover, inability to renew one’s mind with the word of God daily, lack of vision, discipline and focus, absenting one’s self from Christian fellowship, disobedience to the word of God, not going out to evangelise, secret sins and hypocrisy, doubt and unbelief are some of the hindrances to prayer. The solution is to repent, clean up yourself by confessing your sins to God, start living a holy and righteous life and start praying. God bless you.
