Topic: God of the Living
[DCLM Daily Manna 24 August 2018 Daily Devotional]
Text: Mark 12:18-27 (KJV)
Key Verse: “He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err” (Mark 12:27).
MESSAGE:
The Sadducees were parochial in their understanding and interpretation of the Scriptures. This was aptly demonstrated in their interpretation of a very important matter in today’s passage. They descended so low in the way they exhibited ignorance in an important matter as marriage and life after death.

According to Jewish teaching, if a man married to a woman died without having an issue, but left behind him some brothers, the eldest of them was expected to marry the widow and raise up children for him. But in this case, seven brothers of a late man each married his wife without having any issue from her. They then asked the question: whose wife will this woman be at the resurrection? Our Lord therefore, pointed their attention to the fact that marriages take place only on earth. There is no marriage in heaven for there, we all become like the angels. The Sadducees therefore, greatly erred in their comparison of earthly things with eternal matters. They also misappropriated the scriptural position and roles of their forefathers like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
It is a great sin to undermine the great power of God. Do not ridicule His great power and ability to bring to life every dead part of your body or system. The God we serve is a living God. Every believer that died in Christ shall rise again in the day of resurrection with a new and glorious body and live forever. We need to avoid the cynical stance of the Sadducees and cease dragging God down to strife and peripheral matters which hold no bearing upon our eternal perspective.
Thought For The Day: God is alive, alert and mindful of our dependence on Him.
