INTRODUCTION:
Have you ever read a storybook that: thrilled you? Maybe the story was about an animal like a tortoise, or the actions in the book were done by carton figures. This week we are going to study about a book in the Bible that is very thrilling and mystifying. Even though some people think it is difficult to read and understand, yet it is important. It is a book that makes one see the Almighty God in action. It reveals how He rules the entire universe as its Lord. The book we are talking about is the Book of Revelation. Revelation is the last book of the Bible. It has 22 chapters. John, one of the disciples of Jesus, wrote this book.
LESSON COMMENTARY
1. Book of Revelation Introduced – Revelation 1:1-2
The Book of Revelation is the book that looks into the future. It is the record of things John saw in a vision from God while he was a prisoner on the island of Patmos.
God visited him there and gave him a revelation of Jesus.
He gave him this revelation to show His servants the events that will take place at the end of all things. In this revelation God also told John some wonderful things about heaven through the Holy Spirit. He had a glimpse of heaven and, later, wrote down the vision and the messages he received from Jesus Christ to His Church in the Book of Revelation. God sent an angel who explained the meaning of the vision to John, His servant. John wrote down all the words of God and Jesus Christ. He also wrote down everything he heard and saw.
2. Blessings Pronounced – Revelation 1:3
There are two conditions to fulfil in order for one to receive a special blessing from God with regards to the prophecy John the Apostle received. The first thing is reading the prophecy. God said anyone who read aloud the prophecy of the b0ok to the Church would receive a special blessing.
Secondly, those who listen to it when it is read and obey what it says will also be blessed. The Lord then went on to say that the time when the things He revealed to John will come true is near.
3. Revelation Talks about Heaven – Revelation 22: 1-5
In the course of his vision, John was shown heaven described as the New Jerusalem. It was a very beautiful city. One of the things the angel who was taking him around showed to him in the New City was a river of pure Water of life. The river was clear as crystal. It flowed from the throne of God and the Lamb, where it started. Then it flowed down the centre of the main street of the New Jerusalem. On each side of the main street trees grew. They were the Trees of life. These trees bore fruits. Never a month there was no fruit on the tree.
The leaves of the trees were used for medicine to heal the nations.
Nothing evil or bad will be seen in the city. This is because the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there. The servants of God will see His face. They will also have the name of God written on their foreheads. There will be no night in this city for the Lord God will be their light and He will reign there forever. So there will be no need for lamps or sun in the New Jerusalem.
4. Revelation ls Trustworthy – Revelation 22:6-7
God, through the angel, told John that the words he had heard are trustworthy and true. It is repeated here that God, who tells His prophets what the future holds sent His angel to give this revelation to John and to tell him the things that will take place shortly.
This was first mentioned in Revelation 1:1. After this, Jesus declares that He was coming soon. And He also repeats that those who believe what He said and every other thing that is written in the book will be blessed.
APPLICATION:
The reason Jesus died on the cross for our sins is that we may be with Him in heaven forever. We should be ready at all times for the return of Jesus. Our sins should be forgiven and we should live for Him daily by obeying His Word.
As long as we live in this way, we do not need to worry about when Jesus will return because we will be ready. Nobody knows when Jesus is coming back. Only God the Father knows.
