SUB-THEME: CALL TO HOLINESS.
TEXT: JOSHUA 7:10-13.
10. The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face?_
11. _LIsrael has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions.
12. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.
13. “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
TOPIC: LIVE A CONSECRATED LIFE.
MESSAGE:
God promised to set Israel above all nations and defeat all enemies that rise up against them (Deut. 28:1ff). In this text, Israel suffered defeat because there was sin among them. They desired and took of the accursed things in disobedience. God ordered Joshua to consecrate the people. They must purify themselves and the guilty person must be brought to book. God would not turn against his people, if they had not turned away from him (cf. Psalm 18:25-26). The Christian life is that of warfare – with Satan and evil. To triumph over him and his schemes, we must maintain a life free of sin. Many a times we compromise our faith by gossiping, lying, cheating, stealing and accumulating wealth wrongly. We will suffer defeat if we do not repent.
