INTRODUCTION:
Isaiah learned one day when he went into the temple that he, himself, was very far from being perfect. The vision he had gave him a proper understanding of his message and his call. It revealed one of the main concerns of the book of Isaiah, which is that God’s glory, majesty, and holiness demand that those who serve Him also must be holy. Today likewise we need a vision of God’s glory and holiness in our midst.
No one else can boast of being perfect and holy. There are no perfect kids anywhere and there are no perfect adults, either. Everybody, how highly placed, falls short of perfection.
Let us now follow the prophet Isaiah into the temple and see what he saw there.
LESSON COMMENTARY
1. THE VISION – Isaiah 6:1-7
Isaiah’s vision happened in the year that King Uzziah died. (Uzziah was a great king who brought honour to his people. During his fifty-two year reign, Judah was prosperous).
Isaiah was in the temple, one day, and had a vision and in the vision, he saw the Lord sitting on a throne that was high and lifted up. He had a robe on and the train of the robe was so much that it filled the whole temple. Right above the Lord were seraphs. Each of the seraphs had six wings. Two of the wings were used to cover the face, two were used to cover the feet, and the remaining two were used to fly. As they flew around, they called to one another saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty: the whole earth is full of His glory.”
As the seraphs were proclaiming God’s holiness and glory, the door shook and smoke filled the temple. There and then, Isaiah saw himself the way he really was – sinful. He had seen the Lord and felt terrible. He acknowledged he was in trouble. He had unclean lips and lived among people with unclean lips.
Immediately, seraph flew to Isaiah and touched Isaiah’s lips with a live coal, which he had taken from the fire with tongs. Then he told Isaiah that his sins had been forgiven.
2. THE CALL – Isaiah 6:8-9
Isaiah was still in the temple. After he had been purged, Isaiah heard a voice. It was the voice of the Lord i wanting to know if there is anyone that would go on errand for Him. Having been made clean, Isaiah answered, “Here am I, send me.” God then sent Isaiah to go and tell His people of the judgement to come. And for forty years, Isaiah faithfully continued to proclaim the Word of God.
3. THE MESSAGE – Isaiah 30:8-21
In verses 8-21: here God told Isaiah to write on a tablet of stone and note it on a scroll before the people of Judah that they were a rebellious people. They were people who told lies and who would not hear the voice of the Lord. They told the prophets not to prophesy right things to them, but only smooth things. They do not want to hear that their chosen human helper is helpless and that they must rely on the Holy One of Israel because the people of Judah despised the Word of God and trusted in oppression, they would be broken into pieces. To despise the Word of God brings a life that is broken in pieces.
APPLICATION:
Because Isaiah learned more about God, he also learned what God wanted him to do. He knew God wanted him to bring a message to the people of lsrael. The more we understand what God is like, the more we’ll know what He wants us to do.
Knowing about God does have an effect on our lives. The knowledge of God’s attributes helps us today to live according to His will. Our memory verse mentions three attributes of God – He is gracious, righteous and merciful.
As Isaiah discovered, God is holy. Therefore, we should serve him witha clean life. Before seeking to serve God, we need to examine our heart and life. Perhaps, we may realise that we have selfish reasons for serving Him. Our motives for serving God and working for Him matter a lot. He sees and knows.
