TOPIC: Domestic Violence (Part 2)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 12:9-12 KJV (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 17 February 2019)

9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

Having discovered the forms and causes of domestic violence, it is important that we critically examine the consequences as well as the remedies for domestic violence. It should be noted that regardless of the forms or causes of violence, God hates those who love violence (Psalms 11:5). Believers are encouraged to abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good, be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another. Romans 12:9-10.

TEXT REVIEW: Romans 12:9-12- “GOODBYE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE”.


Apostle Paul identified ten(10) remedies that could eradicate domestic violence through the umbrella of love :

  1. True and sincere love. Romans 12;9a.
  2. Distance yourself from evil. Romans 12:9b.
  3. Cleave to good. Romans 12:9c.
  4. Be kind-hearted with brotherly love. Romans 12:10a.
  5. Honour others better than yourself. Romans 12:10b.
  6. Never be lacking in zeal. Romans 12:11a.
  7. Be fervent in the spirit and serve the Lord. Romans 12:11b.
  8. Rejoice in hope ( trusting in God that all will be well). Romans 12:12a.
  9. Be patient in tribulation/affliction (Believing that solution is near. Romans 12:12b.
  10. Continue to be faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12c.

These doses have been divinely tested and trusted.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: CONSEQUENCES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence is different from discipline.
The following are some of the consequences of domestic violence:

i. Sin and divine rejection. Gen. 4:7
ii. Hindered or unanswered prayer.1 Peter 3:7.
iii. Contradiction of doctrines. 1 Tim. 6:3-4.
iv. Shame and condemnation. Obadiah 10.
v. Depression and psychology stress. Gen. 32:7-8.
vi. Guilt, hatred and trauma. 2 Sam.13:15, 18-20.
vii. Loss of self-esteem/confidence 2 Sam.13:19-20.
viii. Isolation, dissociation. Gen. 13:7-9 and absent mindedness.
ix. Decreased productivity. Prov. 12:4.
x. Broken homes ( separation, divorce etc). Malachi 2:16.
xi. Health related issues. Proverbs 17:22.
xii. Loss of life ( suicide or murder). 2 Sam.13:28; Gen. 4:8 and property.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Differentiate between domestic violence and discipline.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: REMEDIES FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

A. THE CASE OF ON-GOING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Teacher should carefully lead the students through the following remedies or guidelines if domestic violence or abuse has been identified in a home:

i. Safety issue must be considered quickly to avoid loss of life.
ii. Factors leading to violence must be identified and discusses or treated with utmost wisdom.
iii. Parties involved must be willing to forgive wholeheartedly
iv. For proper healing of the pains, physical and psychological Christian counselor would be required.

B. PREVENTION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/REMEDIES.

i. Following God involves serving others, not manipulating and controlling them (Matt.20:26-28). Apply wisdom in dealing with members of your household. Prov.24:2-6/1 Peter 3:7.
ii. Christians are called to sacrificially love others, especially those in their own families. John 13:34; Eph.5:1-2.
iii. Be positive about one another. 1Thess. 5:13b; Phil.2:3.
iv. Communicate deeply at all times but avoid corrupt languages. Prov.25.9; Col.4:6; Eph.4:29. Do not go to bed without settling disputes.. Eph.4:26.
v. Pray against/about conflict (Matt.26:41)..Be sober and vigilant against satanic strategies.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What role can sacrificial love play in curbing domestic violence.

SUMMARY: Be at peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one can see God. Hebrews 12:14

CONCLUSION: Domestic violence hurts the heart of God. Family is meant to reflect God’s love. It saddens Him when a home turns into place of pain. God’s desire for those involved in domestic violence, both the victims and abusers, is healing and wholeness.

EVALUATION: Mention three (3) consequences and remedies for domestic violence.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, give Your children grace to give peace and love chances in their homes.

ASSIGNMENT: Explain/give five (5) suggestions on how homes globally can be free from domestic violence. .
