BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 19:1-6 KJV (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 10 March 2019)
1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
LESSON INTRODUCTION:
Our Lord Jesus Christ declared that the ability to speak with a new tongue shall be one of the signs that follow everyone who believes in Him (Mark 16:17). While every believer receives the Holy Spirit at the point of their conversion (Acts 2:38), believers are expected to continue to thirst and hunger for the infilling of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49). In this lesson we shall attempt to answer some of the mind boggling questions about speaking in an unknown tongue and its benefits.
TEXT REVIEW: ACTS 19:1-6.
The procedures for receiving the Holy Spirit baptism was clearly stated in Acts 19:1-6. These are stated below:
i. Hearing the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and believing it (the twelve people in Acts 19:1 were disciples, which means, they had heard and believed the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ).
ii. The next procedure is water baptism. They were baptised (Acts 19:3-5). Note the word, “baptism of repentance” in Acts 19:4. Those who genuinely want the baptism of the Holy Spirit must have genuinely repented their sins.
iii. Then comes the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit has occurred through the following:
a. Waiting on the Lord in unity for his promise (Acts 2:1). The Holy Spirit came like a rushing wind (Acts 2:2). They spoke in tongues. Acts 2:4.
b. Waiting to hear the Word of God from the mouth of Peter. The Holy Spirit came while Peter was yet speaking. Acts 10:33,44
c. Paul laid hands on people who were disciples (who heard the gospel) and they received the Holy Spirit and spoke with tongues. Acts 19:6.
iv. In the three instances stated under item 3, “speaking in tongues” was a constant evidence of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
v. No ritual or trick was required. No money was paid or offered. It is a free gift. Acts 8:20

iii. Some believers can receive both gifts of speaking in new tongues and diverse kinds of tongues.
iv. God speaks to the church through diverse kinds of tongues with an interpreter (Another gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 12:10). So that the church can be edified. 1 Cor. 12:11; 14:5
v. Speaking in new tongue is for self-edification while speaking in diverse kinds of tongues with interpreter is for edification of the church. Acts 14:5
vi. In the days of the Apostles, different countries languages which were not the original languages of the believers were spoken by the believers in confirmation of the gift of diverse kinds of tongues. Acts 2:7-12.

- O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day, Thy friendship suits me well,
Both young and old will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?
