READ THE SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 19: 12-38The two daughters of Lot conceived of their father.
Genesis 19:36
Before this incident, these two girls were physically virgins, but they were already perverted in their minds. They had long since become accustomed to obscenity and had been inevitably seduced, so that in the cave, high in the mountains, they clung to the slightest excuses, and the story ends with a disgusting orgy of drunkenness and incest. . Lot did not have anything other than deep pain as a result of his years in Sodom. The Lord said: “For everyone who wants to save his life will lose it” (Matthew 16: 25a). So Lot, wanting to get the best out of both worlds, lost everything becoming for a time the image of the Christian who “will be saved, even as well as by fire” (1 Corinthians 3: 16b). It has nothing but lost years to think about and an eternity ahead. When you try to get the best of both worlds, you destroy other people besides yourself. What was the most acute pain that Lot felt in his heart when he woke up there in the cave in the mountains and found out what had happened? Do you think it was suffering for lost wealth, for your lost honor, for your troubled mind? Do you not believe that the greatest and deepest wound of all in this man’s heart was to recognize what he had done to his loved ones in Sodom, to his daughters and to his wife? Your children are watching you parents and they are witnesses of your outer respectability, your desire to be right and to do good. But in the case of some of you, they also see that the most valuable thing in your life is to make a profit or enjoy the pleasures. They realize that you will quickly sacrifice going to a prayer meeting for a night of fun, that you are always willing to get a higher salary, whatever the consequences for the family in terms of new conditions or new circles of friendships. See that those things for which you sacrificed and for which you are willing to spare and save are not the missions or the church or the work of God, but a new car, a new television, more attractive furniture, a longer vacation or a pretentious home. They are watching and seeing all these things.
Little by little children lose interest in the Bible and in the church. Then they decide to prosper in the world and earn the respect of Sodom, regardless of the moral restrictions that have to be thrown overboard to get it. This is why we see the tragedy in Christian homes where children are turning away from God. And the deep pain in their hearts will be that, even though they still have their own faith, because of their commitment they have lost their children. This tragic story of Lot is happening here and now, in the modern Sodom and Gomorrah in which we live.
Father, thank you for this hard, but loving warning of Lot’s life. Help me to know how to make decisions that will have a result in those whom I want to see and want all that You are and all that You provide for those who follow you.
Application to life
We must always remember that we do not live in isolation. Do we meditate on our options, aware that the direction we follow has serious consequences that affect other people?
