John Maxwell in his book, ‘The Leader Within You’ stated that the Great Wall of China was built so high that no one could get over it and so thick that no one could tunnel through it. Amazingly, in the first 100 years of its existence, China was invaded three times. The enemy invaded through a gate left open for them because those who guarded it had been bribed. While the people sat comfortably behind the security of this gigantic wall which still exists today, they failed to teach their children integrity and patriotism. So, they were sold out to the enemy.

David expressed his confidence in God who was his Salvation and Defense. He stated the danger of putting one’s confidence in unregenerate men, who can be very undependable. He described men as lighter than vanity when placed in a balance, and said, trusting in them is like putting one’s hope in a mirage. He also cautioned against putting one’s confidence in riches which can be very disappointing as money can fail anytime. He concluded by extolling the justice and equity of God as more reason to trust Him. God is indeed faithful.

We can’t be too sure of the actual event that prompted the context of this psalm but the setting fits into the many stories of betrayals that David faced ranging from his plight with Saul after killing Goliath and the tacit support given the rebellious Absalom by some leaders in Israel.

Having people whom you placed your utmost trust turn against you is no longer news. People can disappoint and even betray the trust placed on them because they are unregenerate. Like David, we must always put our absolute trust in the most reliable and ever merciful God.

Thought For The Day: Better to trust the unseen God than believe in finite man.
