Solomon wrote the larger body of the wise sayings in the book of Proverbs. He fought no major war and so had a settled ambience backed by enormous resources left for him by his father, King David, to undertake unprecedented development and kingdom expansion. But God was the source of his success.

God’s intention was for Israel to have constant intake of sound counsel required to do His bidding, though they had a king who physically and routinely attended to their concerns. These sayings would always startle and command attention.

For instance, verse 7 talks of the rich assuming themselves to have much, but really have nothing, with the poor mourning that they are poor. This represent a noble call to take on a spirit of giving in order to be blessed by God as commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 6:38 and Acts of the Apostles 20:35. The best example of this is Jesus Himself as revealed in 2 Corinthians 8:9: “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” There is also a warning against despising the word of God in verses 13-17.

As these proverbs are not ordinary declarations, they are bound to attract ordinary men and women as it was with the queen of Sheba who crossed several territories to Israel to hear the sayings of Solomon. Today, however, the Christian has a greater message that should command irresistible attention and audiences numbering countless millions. Our message is Jesus ‘a greater than Solomon.’ We must position His gospel to outshine and outlive other traditions.

Thought For The Day: Jesus ‘a greater than Solomon’ commands greater attention.
