Topic: Vengeance Is His
[DCLM Daily Manna 19 June 2019 Daily Devotional by Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi]
Text: Nahum 1:1-10 (KJV)
Key Verse: “God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet” (Nahum 1:2,3).
MESSAGE:
A prince wielded so much power that his word was law and his father, the king, never had the courage to effectively stop him. His tyranny came to a head when he ordered the arrest and detention of a young man who was in a relationship with a beautiful girl he had interest in. Secretly, he ordered the execution of the young man, claiming that in his attempt to break jail, he took up arms against the guards and was shot. He almost got away with this murder until he died suddenly of a mysterious hailstone on the day he was getting married to the village beauty. His father also died that day.
The text under consideration shows that God is jealous and will never tolerate wickedness from anyone. Though He may be slow to anger, yet He will not allow evil men to go unpunished.
Imageries in the passage will conjure fear in the heart of any living being: “the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind; has his way in the storm; the clouds are the dust of his feet; he rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry; drinketh up all the rivers; mountains quake at him, and the hills melt; indignation; fierceness of his anger; his fury poured down like fire; the rocks are thrown down by him; darkness shall pursue his enemies; he shall destroy as stubble”. Many people shrug off such passages on the grounds that it was specific to other people. But they are wrong. All of God’s word is true in all ages, for all people. It is therefore, foolish to continue in acts of wickedness because judgment from God is delayed. God will not acquit the wicked, but reserves vengeance for His adversaries and wrath for His enemies.
Anyone who acts contrary to God’s word becomes His enemy. And upon such people hangs the sentence of death, unless they repent and turn from their evil ways.
Thought For The Day: In the face of God’s anger, it is better to bend than to burn.
