CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL MANUAL ASSEMBLIES OF GOD CHURCH LESSON 13 26TH MARCH 2023
INTRODUCTION:
“Helper” is a person who gives or does something to meet a need or to enable another person to reach a goal. So, in view of this, what does a helper do in a school? What other names do you call helpers in school? Jesus is the Helper. He has the power to help. He is always ready to help, and everything obeys His commands.
Today, we shall see Jesus the Helper at work. He helped three persons who represent all believers. He helped a man, helped the man’s sick son, and also helped His own disciples. He had earlier taken three of His disciples – Peter, James and John to the Mountain of Transfiguration. There He changed before them and they saw Him discussing with Moses and Elijah. The remaining nine disciples were left down the valley where they waited for Jesus and the three.
It was when Jesus, Peter, James, and John came down from the mount and joined the rest in the valley that the events in this week’s lesson took place.
LESSON COMMENTARY
1. JESUS HELPS THE FATHER OF THE BOY – Mark 9:14-24
Leaving the mount where He was of changed in the presence of His disciples, He came back to the rest of the disciples. He noticed a great crowd surrounding His disciples. He also saw that some religious leaders were arguing with them. When He arrived, everybody ran to Him and greeted Him. He then asked the religious leaders what they were discussing with His disciples. Somebody in the crowd told Him that he brought his sick son to the disciples to be healed but the disciples couldn’t heal him. At this point, Jesus took over from the disciples and helped out.
According to the man who spoke, his boy suffered from epilepsy or what is called seizures. Whenever he had the attack, he would fall down, foamed at the mouth, convulsed, gnashed his teeth and became rigid. When Jesus heard all this, he asked that the boy be brought to Him. And when the boy was brought, he immediately had an attack right before Jesus. The evil spirit tortured him. The father cried out and begged the Lord to do something if He could. Jesus, the Helper, helped the man. He told him that all things were possible if only he could believe. Immediately, the man cried out and asked the Lord to help him believe.
2. JESUS HELPS THE SICK BOY – Mark 9:25-27
People came running together and when Jesus saw this, He rebuked the evil spirit in the boy. He called it a deaf and dumb spirit and commanded it to come out of the boy. He also ordered it never to enter into the boy again. The evil spirit cried out with a loud voice and once again harassed the boy greatly. Then it came out of Him. The boy fell down and it appeared he was dead. The crowd thought so too. Some even said it out that the boy was dead.
But Jesus, the Helper, immediately helped the boy by taking him by the hand and lifting him up. The boy arose and Jesus handed him over to his father.
3. JESUS HELPS HIS DISCIPLES – Mark 9:28-29
Jesus then left the place and went into the house with His disciples. As soon as they were inside, the disciples asked Him why they, themselves, could not cast the evil spirit out of the sick boy. He told them that, that kind of evil spirit does not come out easily. He said that it takes prayer and fasting to cast it out. So, what that meant was that the disciples, to whom the sick boy was brought, did not meet the requirements of casting an evil spirit out and helping the sick boy and his father.
So with the explanation Jesus gave them, they felt better. They knew that one day, they would learn. That was how Jesus helped their feelings after taking over from them and healing the sick boy.

APPLICATION:
Christ assures us as believers that He is always ready to help and deliver us from all our problems and sicknesses. We should come to Him with all our problems and He will help us.
He wants to be our Helper because He has great power. He can help us because He is God’s Son. Satan tries to make us do wrong things but Jesus can help us do the right. He can help us share what we have with others – our food, our playthings, our clothes, our books, etc. He can help us to live for Him. He can help us not to lie, but to tell the truth always. He can help us not to get angry with anyone today. Jesus can help us obey our parents and teachers and even obey God.
