BASIC SCRIPTURE: PSALM 2: 1-9
Psalm 2:1-9 (KJV):
1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

Verse 1-3: The psalm begins by describing the rebellious nature of humanity. People and nations conspire against the Lord and His appointed ruler. They seek to break free from God’s guidance and authority, imagining that they can establish their own way.
Verse 4-6: Despite the rebellion of humanity, the Lord remains undisturbed. He sits enthroned in the heavens and even laughs at the feeble attempts of earthly rulers to challenge His sovereignty. God declares that He has established His King on His holy hill, symbolizing His unshakable authority.
Verse 7-9: The Lord speaks and proclaims that the Anointed One is His Son, begotten by Him. The Father grants the Son authority and power over the nations, promising Him the entire world as His inheritance. This divine King will rule with unbreakable authority, like a rod of iron, and His enemies will be shattered.
Devotional Reflection: This Psalm reminds us of the eternal truth that God is the ultimate authority and sovereign ruler over all creation. It also points us to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would fulfill God’s promise as the King of kings and Lord of lords.
As we reflect on Psalm 2, we can draw several key lessons: Devotional 14 September 2023
- Rebellion Against God: The psalm vividly portrays the futility of human rebellion against God. It serves as a warning against rejecting His authority and seeking to live apart from His guidance.
- God’s Sovereignty: Despite human rebellion, God remains in control. His authority is unshakable, and He laughs at the feeble efforts of those who oppose Him. This should provide comfort and assurance to believers.
- The Messiah’s Reign: Psalm 2 foreshadows the reign of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. He is the King anointed by God, and His rule will extend over all nations. This points to the ultimate victory and authority of Christ in the world.
- Submission to God: In light of God’s sovereignty and the reign of Christ, we are called to submit to His authority willingly. Rather than rebelling, we should seek to align our lives with His will and purpose.
- Hope and Assurance: For believers, Psalm 2 offers hope and assurance. We serve a God who is in control, and His plans will ultimately prevail. Our trust and confidence can rest in Him. Devotional 14 September 2023
