The importance of the word of God in the home cannot be over emphasised.
The word of God is the basis for any individual that would want to thrive in life.
It is important that the present generation is producing so called Christian homes without God’s Word being taught anymore.
No wonder the moral decadence is surging on a dialy basis.
1. DIVINE INJUNCTION TO TEACH GOD’S WORD IN THE HOME:
A. Moses under God gave the intention severally to the Israelites to teach God’s word in their homes. There is power in teaching God’s word in the home. Constant teaching of the word of God in the home makes the family members to be word addict (Deuteronomy 4:9-10; 11:19).
B. Asaph, a levite in the court of king David was both a music leader and a teacher, he wrote this psalms recording the history of Israel from Egypt all the way to David. In the course of this psalms, Asaph rehearsed the instruction of God through Moses to teach God’s word consistently in the family (Psalm 78:5-7).
C. Abraham somehow was already carrying in his mind sub consciously the instruction to teach(command) his households the word of God. Hence, the attestation of God’s word about him in (Genesis 18:19).
2. THE ORIGINAL INTENT OF TEACHING GOD’S WORD IN THE HOME
i. To learn to fear the Lord.
ii. To be teachers of same word to generations following.
iii. For longetivity (Deuteronomy 11:21).
iv. For sound health (Proverbs 4:22).
v. To remember the faithfulness of God in the past present and future (Joshua 4:1-7).
3. RESULTS OF TEACHING GOD’S WORD IN THE HOME
The word of God when heeded to can do the following things:
i. Produce a godly generation.
ii. Instills the fear of God in the home.
iii. Builds a godly lineage etc.
4. HOW TO TEACH GOD’S WORD IN THE HOME
Here are some suggestions on how to teach God’s word in the home:
i. Try singing hymns and choruses as you wash disshes or any domestic chores.
ii. Talk about the things of the Lord as you take the children to and from church to school.
iii. When you go out for a walk, admire the wonder of God’s creation and praise Him together.
iv. Parents should demonstrate their faith in God before their children in handling life difficulties like financial crisis, serious illness, dented fender.
v. Set aside definite time to study God’s word together as a family. Keep it short to avoid being boring.
vi. Devotion in the family, whether in the morning or at night, should not be down played.
CONCLUSION:
The picture of the future is in the scripture. When we teach the word of God in our homes, we should have secured a good future for ourselves and children. Joshua did his home work well, hence his confidence to tell the Israelites that in case they all refuse to serve the Lord, he and his household will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).
Shalom!
