RCCG Open Heavens 20 August 2026 Today Message by Pastor E.A. Adeboye
When you enter into a covenant with the Owner of the earth and the fullness thereof (Psalm 24:1), the One who owns all the gold and the silver (Haggai 2:8), He will prosper you and add no sorrow to it (Proverbs 10:22).
The devil often lures people into entering into a covenant with him by promising them great wealth. However, such prosperity always comes with many sorrows. I recall the story of a man who went to a herbalist and entered into a covenant with demonic forces so that he could become incredibly wealthy for seven years, after which he would die. He swallowed a charm the herbalist gave him, but he didn’t get rich; instead, he had a seven-year countdown to his death. A few days before the seven years expired, the man ran into the church and told us his story. We told him to give his life to Jesus Christ, and He would protect him. He agreed, and we prayed a simple prayer with him. Right there, in the presence of everyone in the church, he vomited what he had swallowed. We rejoiced with him, and for a while after that, he attended church services regularly. After some time, however, he stopped coming, so we decided to conduct a follow-up. When we visited him, he said that the herbalist had told him he had swallowed the first charm incorrectly, so he gave him another one to swallow. Before long, he became wealthy. When the seven-year period stipulated by the covenant was close to expiring, he thought to himself, “The covenant is here in Nigeria. I will travel to London, and the demons won’t be able to reach me there.” Unfortunately, he died on a plane as he flew to London. Only God’s covenant of prosperity will make a fellow rich and add no sorrow with it.
Malachi 3:10 is a vital part of God’s covenant of prosperity. When you pay your tithe, God will open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing upon you that will be so great that you will not have enough room to contain it. Furthermore, Proverbs 3:9-10 encourages us to honour God with our firstfruits. God doesn’t need money; He can provide for anything He wants to do, but He asks to be honoured. Beloved, once you are in covenant with God, He will always provide for you and make sure that you never lack. May your life always reflect the blessings of the Lord, in Jesus name.
Prayer Point:
Father, please help me to honour You with the resources You bless me with.
Bible in One Year:
Jeremiah 50
Hymn 52: There Shall Be Showers of Blessings
Verse 1:
There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
Chorus:
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need;
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
Verse 2:
There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.
(Chorus)
Verse 3:
There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come, and now honor Thy Word.
(Chorus)
Verse 4:
There shall be showers of blessing,
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!
(Chorus)
Open Heavens Devotional 20 August 2026 Commentary
Theme: The Burden Bearer offers God’s covenant of prosperity—true wealth that comes without sorrow. Unlike the devil’s counterfeit, which brings death and bondage, God’s prosperity flows from obedience, honour, and trust in Him as the source.
Major Keywords: God’s covenant of prosperity, power to get wealth, honour God with firstfruits, tithing, devil’s counterfeit wealth, prosperity without sorrow.
Commentary Summary:
-
God Is the Source of Wealth: Deuteronomy 8:18 declares that God gives the power to get wealth. He owns all gold and silver (Haggai 2:8), and His prosperity comes without sorrow (Proverbs 10:22).
-
The Devil’s Counterfeit: The enemy lures people with promises of wealth, but it always comes with sorrow, bondage, and death. The story of the man who swallowed a charm for seven years of wealth—only to die on a plane trying to escape—shows that demonic covenants are traps.
-
The Covenant of Prosperity Includes Tithes and Firstfruits: Malachi 3:10 promises open windows of heaven for those who tithe. Proverbs 3:9-10 promises barns filled with plenty for those who honour God with their firstfruits.
-
Key Truth: God’s prosperity does not require selling your soul. It flows from obedience, honour, and trust. Stay in covenant with God, honour Him with your resources, and He will prosper you without sorrow.
Reference to Theme: This message, GOD’S COVENANT OF PROSPERITY, continues the covenant series. It contrasts the devil’s empty promises of wealth with God’s true prosperity, which comes through obedience, tithing, and honouring Him. The choice is clear: wealth with sorrow or prosperity with life.
Action Steps:
-
The Covenant Check: If you have ever sought wealth through ungodly means—charms, cults, or pacts—renounce it today. Repent. Ask God to break the covenant.
-
The Tithe and Firstfruits Commitment: If you have been withholding what belongs to God, restore it. Honour Him with the first portion of your increase.
-
The Trust Declaration: Declare daily: “God gives me power to get wealth. He is my source. I will not trust in the devil’s empty promises.”
