Samuel was one of the mightiest prophets in the Old Testament, but even he had to learn how to hear God’s voice. In Samuel’s case, he heard God speak to him through his physical ears. God used this same form of direct revelation to communicate His will to Abraham (see Genesis 12:1), Moses (see Exodus 3:4), Job (see Job 38), and others.

But God also uses other ways to get His message to people and make sure it is received. The Bible is clear that God does speak to His people today. The author of Hebrews opens his letter this way: “God, who at various times and in various
ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son” (1:1–2). God is not silent but alive and active.
He speaks to you individually and in a way that you can hear Him, receive His message, and obey Him.
Don’t doubt He is fully capable of communicating to you right where you are—in the midst of your circumstances—in a personal way.
