MESSAGE:

A visitor going into the studio of a great painter found on his easel, some very fine gems, brilliant and sparkling. Asked why he kept them there, the painter replied, “I kept them there to tone up my eyes, when I am working in pigments; insensibly the sense of colour becomes weakened. By having these pure colours before me to refresh my eyes, the sense of colour is brought up again just as the musician by his tuning fork brings his string up to the concert pitch”.

The psalm under consideration may have been written at the time when David asked his enemies to reconsider their support for Absalom. Others see it as a prayer for relief from calamity or affliction. Whichever way it is, one thing stands out in this psalm, that is, the special place godly people occupy in the heart of God. The Bible says, God “hath set apart him that is godly for himself”. God readily identifies with the godly to protect and provide for them in times of need. The godly are people who are faithful and devoted to Him. David, because of the confidence he had in God, knew that He would hear and answer him when he called. He further admonishes everyone to fear God, run away from sin and put their trust in God.

The deliverance, preservation and protection of the godly are to keep them for the sacred service of God. There are many souls (men, women, youths and children) to be brought into the kingdom of God. There are converts to be discipled and established in the Lord. God is depending on those who have known the truth to persuade others who are yet to know Him.
