[DCLM Daily Manna 2nd August 2018 Daily Devotional] Text: 1 Chronicles 13:1-14 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjathjearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it” (1 Chronicles 13:6).

Arnold Glasow once said: “One of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognise a problem before it becomes an emergency”. In emergency situations, many leaders resort to panic actions.

The ark, a symbol of God’s presence, power and protection had been captured and kept by the Philistines for seven months. It was later returned to Israel and kept at Kirjathjearim. And throughout his reign, King Saul treated the ark with disdain as it lay in obscurity. But when David became king over all Israel, one of his foremost duties was to mobilise and bring back the ark to Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, it is a grievous sin to take God for granted. This lesson was lost upon Uzzah while the ark was being brought back as he put forth his hand to hold the ark – a forbidden act. He was immediately visited with the wrath of God. Uzzah’s act was the prize of doing a noble deed in an ignoble manner. The prescription was that the ark should be carried by the sons of Kohath with the use of a cart; neither should it be touched by a human hand.

As we engage in the work of the Lord, we must do so with diligence and reverence, timeliness and promptness. This is because God’s work is a serious business and we must see it as David regarded it. A carefree and presumptuous attitude to the work of the ministry should be abhorred and avoided.

It is mandatory for believers to serve God. Serving Him however, must be in His terms of holiness and righteousness, decency and orderliness. Any service rendered without these conditions are unacceptable to Him.

Thought For The Day: Love and reverence must characterise our work for God.
